How To Configure Gaim For Gtalk

Nowadays, more and more people use Gtalk as an interesting alternative to MSN Messenger because Gtalk uses an open-source protocol: Jabber. Gtalk and Jabber clients are also better because they don't have ads.
Here is how to configure Gtalk on Gaim, a popular multi-platform instant messaging client that supports many commonly used instant messaging protocols.

1. If you do not have Gaim already installed onto your computer then download the program from here ( http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php ). Once the download process is over, install Gaim.

2. Launch Gaim.

3. On the Login window click Accounts.

4. A new window will pop. Now click Add to add your Gtalk account to the list.

5. At this step you must enter some information in order to configure your Gtalk account.

For Protocol select from the list Jabber.
Under the Screen Name type your Gmail username without @gmail.com.
In the Server field enter gmail.com.
Leave Gaim in the Resource field.
Type in your password in the Password field and enter an alias, the nickname you want to be displayed in your friends' buddy list.
Check the Remember password and Auto-login boxes.

6. Click the Show more options button. The windows will expand and you will have to enter the following:

Use TLS if available: You need to check this option
Port: 5222
Connect server: talk.google.com
Proxy type: Use Global Proxy Settings

7. When you are done, click Register, and your Gtalk account will be added to your list of accounts.

You will be connected to Gtalk and after a few seconds, your Gtalk buddies should be added to your buddy list in Gaim.
